Mission Statement
As a team of highly trained and dedicated volunteers it is Southold
Fire Department’s mission to anticipate, prepare for and provide rapid
extinguishment of hostile fire, mitigate the effects of natural disaster,
control hazardous material incidents, rescue all persons in danger on land or sea, provide care,
transport and advanced life support to anyone experiencing traumatic injury
or medical emergencies. At the ready 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We
will carry this mission out with sincere commitment, compassion,
integrity, professionalism and respect toward our community, anyone passing
through it and our surrounding mutual aid communities.
Who we are
Today Southold Fire Department, a publicly owned, non profit
organization, is the hamlet of Southold and Peconic’s local volunteer fire
department. Made up of 189 of your friends, neighbors, and family, who for over
120 years, give our time freely and generously to protect you and those you
love.
We provide you with well trained, dedicated volunteers that carry
pagers, that when activated, interrupt a work day, family time, a warm meal, or
even sleep to rapidly respond with highly maintained up to date fire fighting
and rescue equipment. The Department currently operates with over 20 fire,
rescue and support apparatus based in 2 stations. The “Main House”, our headquarters located on Route 25 at the east
end of Southold village is manned with a dispatcher 24/7 and contain the offices
of the Fire District, Chiefs, Companies and Squads.
Stationed in this house are
2 class A pumpers, an ambulance, a heavy rescue truck, a dive rescue truck, and
several support vehicles. The second house, our Sub Station on Baywater Ave.,
houses a class A pumper, a tanker, a hose truck, an aerial ladder truck (also a
class A pumper), an ambulance, a dive rescue boat and other support vehicles.
This house also has full dispatch capabilities.
Our Department responds to over 600 calls per year of which 70% are
medical related. The balance being “general alarms”, i.e.; fires, motor vehicle
accidents, water rescues and mutual aid calls to our neighboring fire
departments.
Charged with overseeing buildings,
grounds, apparatus, equipment and membership is the Southold Fire District and
its five elected Fire Commissioners, a Secretary, Treasurer and Attorney. All
alarms, day to day operations, apparatus and equipment care are run by the Chief
Engineer, his 1st and 2nd Assistant Chiefs, Chaplain,
Training officer, Secretary, Treasurer and Trustees.
The Department consists of three Fire Companies and several
Squads.

The companies are
each run by a member elected Captain, a 1st Lieutenant, a 2nd
Lieutenant, Chief drivers for its vehicles, a Treasurer, a Secretary, and
Trustees. Squad officers and their Chief drivers are appointed by the Chief
Engineer. Each Company and Squad is charged with the upkeep, and operation of
its assigned Southold Fire Department vehicles. |
