Who we are

Today Southold Fire Department, a publicly owned, non profit organization, is the hamlet of Southold and Peconic’s local volunteer fire department. Made up of 189 of your friends, neighbors, and family, who for over 120 years, give our time freely and generously to protect you and those you love.

We provide you with well trained, dedicated volunteers that carry pagers, that when activated, interrupt a work day, family time, a warm meal, or even sleep to rapidly respond with highly maintained up to date fire fighting and rescue equipment. The Department currently operates with over 20 fire, rescue and support apparatus based in 2 stations.  The “Main House”, our headquarters located on Route 25 at the east end of Southold village is manned with a dispatcher 24/7 and contain the offices of the Fire District, Chiefs, Companies and Squads.  Stationed in this house are 2 class A pumpers, an ambulance, a heavy rescue truck, a dive rescue truck, and several support vehicles. The second house, our Sub Station on Baywater Ave., houses a class A pumper, a tanker, a hose truck, an aerial ladder truck (also a class A pumper), an ambulance, a dive rescue boat and other support vehicles. This house also has full dispatch capabilities.

Our Department responds to over 600 calls per year of which 70% are medical related. The balance being “general alarms”, i.e.; fires, motor vehicle accidents, water rescues and mutual aid calls to our neighboring fire departments.

Charged with overseeing buildings, grounds, apparatus, equipment and membership is the Southold Fire District and its five elected Fire Commissioners, a Secretary, Treasurer and Attorney. All alarms, day to day operations, apparatus and equipment care are run by the Chief Engineer, his 1st and 2nd Assistant Chiefs, Chaplain, Training officer, Secretary, Treasurer and Trustees.

The Department consists of three Fire Companies and several Squads.
